Classification
Supplemental: Parkinson's Disease (PD)
Short Description of Instrument
The Radboud Oral Motor Inventory for Parkinson?s Disease (ROMP) is a self-reported questionnaire that was developed in 2011, based on both clinician experience and patient opinion. It screens for abnormalities of speech, swallowing, saliva control and it measures the physical and psychosocial impact of each domain. The ROMP is divided into three sections - Speech, Swallowing, Saliva. The Speech section contains 7 questions; the Swallowing section 7; the Saliva section 9.
Scoring and Psychometric Properties
Scoring: The ROMP is a 23-item, self-reported questionnaire with 3 domains: ROMP-speech (7 items), ROMP-swallowing (7 items), ROMP-saliva (9 items). Severity score in each question range from 1-5 points. Total score: 23-114 points.

Psychometric Properties: Internal consistency was 0.95 for the total ROMP and 0.87 to 0.94 for the three subscales. Intraclass correlation coefficients for reproducibility were 0.94 and 0.83 to 0.92 for the subscales. Construct validity was substantial to good, with correlations ranging from 0.36 to 0.82.
Rationale/Justification
Strengths: The ROMP measures both frequency and impact (e.g., physical and psychosocial) aspects of the three components studied.  It is a validated and reliable instrument to evaluate patient-perceived problems with speech, swallowing, and saliva control in individuals with Parkinson's disease. It has been designated as "recommended" by the MDS Task Force on Rating Scales for Parkinson's disease.

Weaknesses: In the validation study, most patients had only mild-moderate symptoms. Additionally, patients may underestimate the severity of difficulties.
